An Introduction to Lead Guitar and Improvisation

A step by step system to go from not knowing your way around the neck, to creating your own licks that always work and sound musical and being able to have fun jamming with backing tracks and your friends

Have you ever wondered why some guitarists can improvise to their hearts content, and others can't?

Have you sat there practising your scales over backing tracks, but struggled to get it sounding like music, rather than a scale?

Have you struggled to come up with ideas for your own licks that sound like music, rather than random notes from a scale?

In my course, "An Introduction to Improvisation", we'll take a step by step approach to solving all of the above problems, so you can use the entire neck, in any key, and have fun creating your own musical ideas.

The Reason Why You're Struggling

Why is it some people can create musical sounding ideas that seem to flow naturally, but other people can only make ideas that sound like a scale exercise?

Is it down to genetics? Luck? Practice?

Sometimes people don't want to try and do something more creative on guitar, like improvising, because they don't think they have the natural ability.

Sometimes people will practice a lot, but not make any real progress, get discouraged and try something else.

The problem is that people rarely break down what goes into improvisation... they usually teach a small fraction of the subject, like a scale, and leave out all the other stuff... and all that other stuff is just as important to helping you develop musical and creative skills on the guitar.

What Does It Take To Improvise On Guitar?

There are several components to improvisation, all of which need to be trained and integrated together in order to be useful:
  • Theory. You need to know what notes you can use, and when you can use them.
  • Ornamentation. You need to be able to make those notes sound good, exciting and lyrical.
  • Rhythm. Your notes need some rhythmic interest.
  • Technique. You have to be able to play those notes accurately and confidently.
  • Structure. You need to take all of the above and combine them into a structure of some sort, so your ideas don't sound like random "guitar diarrhoea".
If you do not train each of these subjects independently, and then integrate them together, you are going to struggle to improvise on guitar.

An Introduction to Improvisation is a step by step training program that takes you through this process of training and integration, to take you from not know how to play over an A minor chord, to freely using the entire neck, in any key, to have fun creating musical ideas and phrases.

An Introduction to Improvisation

This 30+ lesson course is a detailed, step by step program that walks through how to go from playing a simple scale, to having fun creating musical ideas and freely improvising on the guitar.

This course is based on over a decade of experience of teaching 100s of students how to improvise. None of these students would have called themselves musically talented, none of them would have called themselves creative... they all find improvising the most fun thing to do on guitar.

The course is broken down into five main types of lesson:

  • Theory. These lessons will walk you through how to play the right scales in the right places over the right chords. The material is presented in bite-size chunks, with clear practice instructions, video examples and tabs.

  • Ornamentation. In these lessons we look at the magic behind taking a "scale" and turning it into a piece of music using bends, slides and vibratos. You will be trained on each of these key skills, so that you can eventually use them effortlessly.

  • Phrase Development. This is a key category of lesson where we integrated the skills and ideas in the previous lessons to get you creating actual music.

  • Technique. These lessons will be exercises to get your fingers working so that you can hit the right notes, every single time. Ripping through solos, here we come!

  • Scale Knowledge. We'll be building your knowledge of the minor pentatonic scale, so that you can use the entire neck, play in any key, starting from any string.

  • Rhythm. Learn how to do more than just play a big string of notes. We'll be studying rhythm and learning how to apply it to lead guitar and melody lines in your improvisation.

  • Practice Schedule. Every few lessons, there will be a suggested practice schedule, to help keep you on track.

Now these aren't presented all "in order". We don't do all the theory, then all the ornamentation etc.

That would be boring and unproductive.

Instead, we cycle through a couple of theory lessons, an ornamentation lesson and a phrase development lesson, etc; so that you can get practice creating actual music and improvising as soon as possible.

Not only is it more fun, it's also more practical.

There will also be "Practice Plan" outlines every few lessons, to give you some examples of how to plan out practising the last few lessons (e.g. 5 mins on Topic A, 15 mins on Topic B etc).

There will also be solos for you to learn, that take several concepts from the lessons and integrate them into full guitar solos. We'll break these down, and you'll have full tabs with backing tracks.

What Does Tim Think?

Tim is several weeks into the course, here is what he has to say about it

You'll Learn Things Like:

Why Less Is More
A key mistake guitarists make when improvising is trying to play every possible note as fast as possible. You'll learn how restricting your note choice can lead to your playing sounding more musical.

When More Is More
We'll also cover technical exercises so that you can get those fast and impressive flurries of notes into your improvisation.

How To Take A Few Notes From A scale And Make Them Sound Like Music
Ornamentation is the difference between your playing sounding like a scale exercise and sounding like music. We will break down every aspect of ornamentation into so much detail and depth you will feel like you have a PhD in ornamentation, you are going to understand exactly how these different ideas work... and you will be trained on exactly how to apply them your playing to get as much fun as you can from every single note.

Repetition And Structure
Did you know that it's possible to make up and idea, and by following a few simple rules (and I mean really, really simple), you can make your made up idea sound like a complete piece of music, that someone sat down and composed?

We'll break down these techniques and approaches, so that you can take your new found improvisation skills and your ability to instantly write new licks... and get you turning your licks into large scale structures...

Your friends are going to think you were sitting down in a darkened room composing all night, when actually you're making up stuff on the spot!

Training Programs To Develop Your Technique And Musicality
Every concept and skill is broken down into simple, easy to follow exercises so that you don't get overwhelmed. Your skills and knowledge will be built incrementally, so that you can consistently improve week by week.

If you're ready to start becoming a musical guitarist that can have fun effortlessly jamming out to backing tracks and with their friends, then hit the button below and start learning today

A Carefully Planned Syllabus

The syllabus has been carefully planned and broken down into bite-size pieces, to help you make steady progress through the lessons

Lesson Delivery

So how are you going to get these lessons? A lot of courses will deliver lessons in clumped together by topic, for example, you'll get 20 lessons on scales, then 15 lessons on ornamentation, etc.

But we are are going to do things differently.

I've tried to structure this in the same way as if you were coming to my house to take lessons.

Once every two weeks, a new set of lessons (3-5 items) will become active in your account.

You'll be receiving video, diagrams, tabs and backing tracks; so that you are crystal clear on what to practice and it is as easy as possible to practice... and have fun while you do it!

In total there will be over 30 lessons.

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

Who is this for?

This is for anyone interested in learning lead guitar and improvisation. If you are Steve Vai, this is probably too easy for you. If you have just started playing guitar, this is probably going to be too much.

If you can play a few chords and riffs, then this is going to be about right.

Do I need to know theory?

Any theory you need to know, you will be taught along the way. There is also a bonus module "An Introduction to Music Theory" that you will have access to.

How much is this?

The course is $197, one off payment. You have access for life. Lessons become available once every two weeks for the duration of the course. You can also pay in split-payments if you prefer.

What am I going to learn?

We will be working with the minor pentatonic scale. Part of the program will be learning the scale over the entire neck. You will also learn ornamentation, how to build phrases and how to make a structured, musical sounding improvisation.

Will I get a practice plan?

Every few lessons, you will get a practice plan that breaks down 2-3 plans for practising the previous lessons, so that you can practice around your busy life... or practice all day.

How much do I need to practice?

I recommend you have at least 25 minutes a day to practice. You will be provided with flexible practice plans to help you work around your schedule.

What do I get?

You will get instant access to the following courses:
  • An Introduction to Improvisation and Lead Guitar
  • An Introduction to Music Theory
  • An Introduction to Reading Music
  • Rhythm and Strumming
  • Two String Sweep Picking

You'll also get access to the community area where you can ask questions....

... and I may throw up a few other things from time to time, in addition to the new lessons.

I like metal, will this work for me?

If you're into bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, then you're in luck - we're going to be covering the techniques and some of the scales that they use. There'll be some classical metal style backing tracks and examples to play over.

If you're into djent/core genres... well truth is I don't listen to those genres so I can't help you.

How much experience do I need?

If you are a total beginner, then I recommend getting a few months of playing under your fingers before starting this course. Once you can some basic riffs and chords, you'll be in a good position to start.

What payment methods do you accept?

Debit cards, credit cards and PayPal are all accepted.

How long do I have access to the lessons for?

You will have access forever. You can sign up today and start next year if you want to, so you can work around your schedule.
